Back in the day, when the French captured English longbow men they'd cut their middle finger off because that's the finger they used to pull the string back, so when the French retreated in battle the English would pull the finger on them and mock them while they ran away basically saying 'we still have our fingers!' the reason the middle finger is offensive stems from the franco-Anglan war . you needed your middle finger to draw a bow string so the french would cut off the middle finger of all the English prisoners. so englsch archers started showing the french their middle fingers when they ran away to be offensive and shit... PS: Im not 100% certain of this story but I found it funny so Im gonna comment it anyways

Btw the reason the middle finger is so offensive is because it all dates back into the hundred years war. Basically, longbowmen mostly use their middle fingers to draw their bows and bows were deadly for cavalry and the enemy were sick of fighting longbowmen so they decided if they capture one of the longbowmen they interrogate them and cut off their middle finger. After it was found out that they were doing this, the longbowmen decided to pull up their middle fingers after they shower their enemies with arrows as a sign of insult. The war is over, but the gesture stuck
