it's not that they're not gonna win, but that they're never gonna win. and all you do by voting 3rd party is split the vote and vote the person you hate the most in. it's happened time and time again. 1912: teddy roosevelt was pissed at his successor taft, ran against him, split the vote and caused democrat woodrow wilson to win the election. 1924, progressive candidate robert la follette won 16% of the vote, split the democratic vote and republican calvin coolidge got in. 1968, george wallace ran for president, and whilst nixon still won, it decreased nixon's majority. 1992, ross perot won 18.9% of the vote, split the vote and got bill clinton in. until america's voting system changes, voting for the candidate you hate the least is going to be a necessary. as jk galbraith said "politics is the art of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable".

Looking back on a video I used to think was intelligent-but now it’s honestly textbook absurdity. The idea that voting for Third-Party candidates in a FPTP system is frankly a woeful misunderstanding of how buggered the control of Democrats and Republicans over America is. This isn’t 1900s Britain where the Labour Party was able to overtake the Liberal Party, the third party support in America is significantly reduced and the spoiler effect is even more absurd than in Britain. Al Gore lost by only a few dozen votes which were gained by a third party. Moreover, voting for Jill Stein and Gary Johnson on the basis they’re vaguely more progressive than the two options we have is incredulous. Jill Stein’s policy on student loan forgiveness is good in concept but she has no grasp on how to pull it off in economic execution. Gary Johnson wants to completely privatise most of the government with a massive cuts. He’s also profoundly weird.

It's crazy looking back at this now. How there's this weird essence of nostalgia, even though things haven't really changed politically since 2016. But Grade was certainly ahead of everyone else with his knowledge of the 2016 election, who the candidates were, and who was best for America. And honestly, I really do miss those days because even though it was a shitty election, at least life was relatively normal back then. Now the economy is a disaster, many on the brink of homelessness, a pandemic and quarantine state/city orders that seem to have no end in sight, the West Coast has literally turned into Mars, murder hornets everywhere, looters and rioters destroying what's left of businesses and once again two shitty candidates for President and third party candidates having no chance of winning.
