Well, if you had done more research (this aint hate comment just adding to what Grade said) you would've found a TON more of stuff. One: The Company that mines most of the diamonds in the world (which also has complete control over the whole industry) is artificially restricting the supply of diamonds so it drives up the price when really Two: They have a (and I quote) fuckton of em. (10 Points to griffindor if you know who im quoting btw) Three: they sell diamonds at an extremely high price, but if you sell them you get so little back from the companies themselves (because they have a lot). That's why they put diamonds on rings. If you never try to sell it, you'll never know how much you got fucked over. (Also somewhat quoted from the same person)

In the 1800s when diamonds where becoming popular they were incredibly difficult to find but later on in the 1880s/1890s they began to find more and more diamonds and creating tons of mines. The price of diamonds was always expensive but only for their rarity, when they found more they kept the price the same and brought low shipments to give the impression they were low in stock and have kept up a similar appearance even today. So although they are common they make you pay a ton of money to get them.
